Thursday 18th March (Day 14)

A hotel opens with 40 rooms. The odd numbered rooms are twin, the even numbered rooms are singles and prime numbered (including 1) rooms are doubles. Guests check in at 3pm and check out at 10am. As guests arrive the manager fills the rooms consecutively and lowest to highest, and empties them highest to lowest.

Groups will be checked into twins unless requested. Only couples are given double rooms and children must share a twin with a parent.

Monday

23 tourists including 4 couples, arrive for 5 nights. 4 Businessmen requesting singles check in for 3 nights.

Tuesday

A marriage-counselling course of 8 couples and two tutors arrive staying until Saturday morning.

A Jury arrive, staying in single rooms for 5 nights.

Wednesday

There is damp in one of the rooms and the two tourists in it move to a new hotel.

A couple arrive on a honeymoon staying for the rest of the week.

A barbershop quartet arrive in town for the national finals on Saturday

Thursday

2 Chess Grandmasters arrive in advance of their showdown on Friday. They will stay for 1 night unless their match overruns.

Friday

2 Chess enthusiasts arrive to watch the unexpected second day of the big showdown tomorrow. They opt to stay for 2 nights to see the town.

Saturday

There is a ballroom dancing competition in town, and 6 couples check in for two nights.

4 couples, each with one child all arrive on an activities weekend.

The British curling team and their coach arrive for pre season training.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito arrive to promote their upcoming film "Juniorer" and for the Oscars on Sunday night.

One of the chess fans decide to stay an extra night to meet his daughter.

Sunday

The chess fans 10 year old daughter arrives from the airport. Which room will she be in?

  1. How can the rooms be emptied highest to lowest? That makes no sense.
    Surely it depends on what day whoever is staying there is due to leave?
    ...or does the manager force people in high numbered rooms to move to lower numbered rooms? What hotel is this, Fawlty Towers?

  2. I think it's to say that if "x person leaves" and you have more than one room containing that type of person, that it is the person in the highest number room that is leaving.

    Well at least that's how I worked it out.
